9th May 2008 Summer brings up images of lazing by the pool or beach with a beer or cocktail (preferably one of those that come with an umbrella) in hand. The only thing is, after spending most of the last 3 months sweating it out in the gym and counting calories just so I can get into my bikini, every single cocktail I drink comes with a lot of guilt. So I chatted up my favourite barman to get tips on low-cal drinking! Here’s what he had to say.. - Anna Piers |

Replace your mixer : Drink your usual spirit on the rocks or with soda water
If you must mix, choose the right mixer : Steer clear of high-calorie sugar-laden packaged juices and sodas. Opt for the diet version instead.

Use the right fresh juice : At only 4 calories each, 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice or lime juice can be used generously. A half cup of tomato juice is only 21 calories.
Switch to the ‘lite’ version of your favourite beer.
Alternate alcoholic drinks with a glass of water or soda water. It will keep you hydrated and reduce the overall amount of alcohol you consume.
Look out for over-sized drinks that could easily double your calories.
Avoid sugary, creamy, cocktails like chocolate martinis and pina coladas that can easily be over 500 calories per glass.

To put that advice into perspective, here’s an idea of how many calories you consume with every drink. Although, there are varying approximations of the calorific value of alcohol – some a little more optimistic (depending on how you view them) than others - I have selected my information from a variety of sources to keep it fair.
